Emeralds are a beautiful rich green stone, one that I've enjoyed working with recently in my May Charm Bracelet and Earrings. Technically speaking, Emerald is a beryllium aluminium silicate mineral. The color comes from tiny amounts of vanadium and/or chromium. It comes in a variety of shade ranging from blue-green to yellow-green, the most valued being a rich forest green.
Historically, we know that emeralds were highly valued by Babylonians around 4000BC. We also know that Cleopatra had emerald mines in Ancient Egypt.
Emeralds are associated with the Heart Chakra. They are believed to attract love including self-love,and thus promote good self-esteem - figures, given the Heart-Chakra association! They also have a calming and balancing effect on emotions, which in combination with improved self-confidence paves the way for understanding and cooperation. When we are truly comfortable with ourselves, we are better able to respond openly and positively to others.
The verdant energies of Emerald are also strongly associated with Springtime; indeed this is a reason that Emerald is the birthstone for May. For this reason they are considered to be beneficial in generating an aura of hope, renewal and growth. Many people find that while the stones are emotionally calming, they are mentally invigorating - a great source of inspiration and drive.
