Pentacles are a symbol strongly associated with paganism and neopaganism. They consist of a pentagram ( a five-pointed star) within a circle. As with many things to do with paganism and in particular wicca, pentacles are often mistakenly construed as being symbols of devil-worship. They are in fact used as protective symbols, and thus are often to be found in pagan homes.

The pentagram is shown with a single point at the top, representing the Spirit, above the other four points, representing the four elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water. For this reason they are symbols of Earth as well as protective talismans. The circle is always a protective symbol, forming a perfect protective barrier between what lies within and what lies without its line.
