Cauldrons are some of the best known magical tools, taking center stage in many Halloween parties and scenes of witchcraft in popular culture. We all know the three witches chanting around the cauldron in Macbeth, and the wicked step-mother queen dunking the soon-to-be poisoned apple into the cauldron in Snow White. But where has this link with witches and cauldrons come from?
Cauldrons are associated with the womb because they contain combining elements to create something new. As such they are further associated with provision, abundance, plenty and transformation.
Cauldrons are also symbolic of Earth on a pagan altar as they are working tools, something which interests me as I have generally thought them to be associated with water as they are vessels, often for liquids. As with all Magical artefacts and beliefs however I believe there is room for personal interpretation.
